Yesterday my mom and I spent some time making Hanukkah cookies!

hanukkah cookies for the holidays

This recipe is a special family tradition that we make every year. The recipe has been passed down from generation to generation. Every year we anticipate the warm and comforting buttery scent spreading throughout the house. I remember decorating these cookies as a little girl, and I still love doing that now. There’s just something so fun and festive about sprinkles, and the familiar cookie cutter shapes and crunchy, sweet cookie are comforting and remind me of the holidays at home.

Hanukkah Butter Cookies

Ingredients

1/2 lb creamed butter
5 cups flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla extract

Directions

Cream butter and gradually add sugar. Add eggs one at a time. Add flour, baking powder and vanilla, mix well. Divide into three parts and roll out on a floured surface. The dough should be approximately 1/8 inch thin. An easy way to achieve this is to use wooden skewers as your guide (simply put the skewers on either side of the dough when rolling. Stop when your rolling pin is rolling on top of the skewers). Cut into desired shapes and place onto a greased cookie sheet. Brush each cookie with egg wash and decorate with sprinkles.

Bake at 375 degrees for 8 minutes (lightly golden) or 12 minutes (well done). Enjoy!
